Faster Cheaper eReaders – Soon To Come

E-readers are getting better, faster and… cheaper? Not to much cheaper but the up and coming Spring Design Alex will sell for $359. Still out of the price range for those who are into the used book store scene.  That being said, however, Freescale’s i.MX508 processor might make these a smart buy. Carrying an 800MHz ARM-based chip that includes, USB host functionality and dedicated circuitry for controlling E-Ink panels. It’s a system on a chip for the next-generation of would-be Kindle killers and will sell for about $10 at volume, resulting in readers that could, according to Freescale, retail for $150. That’s the kind of price point that might make steadfast book readers go out and buy an up to date ereader.
